One of Berrydesign’s favourite raw materials of all is oak – this majestic wood looks stunning when used in the kitchen, dining room, or living room alike.
Solid oak enjoys a fantastic heritage. It has traditionally been associated with protection, strength, and stability, and for many centuries it was the main forest tree in Britain. Oak is now widely cultivated in managed tree plantations across Europe and these plantations are where we source all of the oak we use to make our contemporary handmade dining and kitchen tables. Oak’s slowness of growth matures the wood so it becomes almost indestructible, and as a timber its most valued qualities are its hardness and toughness.
Oak is a very strong timber, and is prized for the beauty of its grain and texture. It has an enviable richness of colour after polishing, and its close-graining and pale straw colour allows it to be both structurally very strong and impact resistant - yet also easily adaptable to match surrounding colours and textures in a room.
One of its best qualities is how adaptable it is when envisioning a table design. Oak can be treated in a pale finish, such as Sandwood, which allows rooms to remain light and open; or else a mid-colour Strawood treatment that can warm up a room. Alternatively, our darkest finishes, such as Wenge, will add a formal, contemporary finish that will transform any room.
Confused about which finish to choose to complement your home? Our advice is to keep an open mind. Many people assume that a statement oak dining or kitchen table should match either their flooring or their kitchen units. Not so. It’s not necessary to follow everything too closely, as all natural timbers work well together – and on some occasions it’s better to have a natural break, which encourages focus.
As we only work with solid wood, we design and make dining and kitchen tables in several different ways, each of which results in a significantly different look. Our most popular handmade option with customers is a knot-free wood grade that has stunning clean contemporary lines down the table length. If you prefer a softer, more rustic feel, then we have a slightly knotted option that allows more colouration in the timber. And for certain designs, we have a forest grade whereby we use wide planks with bark remaining on the edges for a structural feel of the forest, complete with the tree’s natural features.
Although naturally resistant to knocks and scratches, all of our solid oak furniture has the option of being treated with an oil-based finish, which will give you the ability to repair the wood if damaged. Upon delivery of your kitchen or dining table, we will also give you complete instructions to ensure that you know exactly how to re-polish your oiled table, and how to repair damaged areas.
Underneath our tabletops, you’ll find high standards of engineering using “T” sections of steel or specially developed expansion bars to allow the wood to move. For our export markets in the Far East and around the world and for lands far away such as Australia, where dramatic changes in humidity are the norm, it's very important furniture can move in these extremes. This starts with our furniture design and goes through to our traditional hand skills and construction methods combined with high technology to allow us to achieve the precise detail in our oak furniture designs.
As our oak tables are handmade they are available in a variety of designs and thicknesses, from 28-30mm as standard, to 34-36mm, 42-44mm, and special edged designs of either 40mm or 85mm.
